So what is Drollery.org? It’s my personal website.

And what is drollery? Drollery means a few things, but it originally referred to the images found in the margins of medieval writings. There are other terms used to describe these drawings too including marginalia, grotesques, and sometimes (incorrectly) illumination. But regardless of the word you use, these drawings amount to hilarious doodles. Today the word drollery means something that is droll, which is probably a word you don’t use much but it means “having a humorous, whimsical, or odd quality”.

So why the name? I love those little doodles in the margins of medieval books. I love that whole aesthetic, probably because I watched way too much Monty Python growing up. That slap-stick reimagining of medieval maraginalia was a real kick for me and I wanted to bring something whimsical and humorous to my own website, I figured that was as good as anything else! I think a personal website shouldn’t take itself too seriously. I make serious websites at work all day long. When I’m done with that the last thing I want to do is abide by UX rules and the prescribed, bland styling of modern web-design. I can make websites that will blow the socks off your SEO consultants, but I don’t want that for my own website. I think it’s much better to treat this as an outlet for my passions, and that means stupid funny!
